Since 2007 the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley (HFSV) has worked in partnership with several health service programs to address the health issues in the Latino community. In 2010 we launched a new initiative, Cuidando con Respeto (Caring with Respect), a program to build awareness about healthy aging in the Latino community and promote quality elder care and support for caregivers. Cuidando con Respeto is funded by the HFSV in partnership with Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County and the Alzheimer’s Association of Northern California and Nevada.
Latino families have a deep connection to their elders. Caring for our aging family members in-home is a strong tradition in the Latino family. As such, there is a great need to care for family caregivers, both with professional training and through professional services that are available to them and/or their loved ones. Studies show that not only do Latinos represent a large portion of caregivers, but that shifting demographics will create a larger need for support services for the elderly and their family caregivers. Cuidando con Respeto provides vital information to Latino family members who are providing caregiver services to an elderly family member.
